Regional anesthetic techniques for surgical, obstetric, and postoperative pain management have been used with increasing frequency in recent years. The combined spinal-epidural (CSE) technique is a relatively new anesthetic option that involves an initial subarachnoid injection followed by placement of an epidural catheter and subsequent administration of epidural drugs. This allows for rapid pain relief or induction of local anaesthesia by rapid initiation of spinal drugs and subsequent administration of drugs for prolonged anaesthesia. In addition, postoperative analgesia via an epidural catheter may prolong treatment. Clinical studies have shown that the CSE technique provides excellent surgical conditions as quickly as a single subarachnoid block and has advantages over conventional epidural blocks. The advantage is that CSE anesthesia provides the benefits of spinal and epidural anesthesia.
