What Is a Tuohy Needle?
A Tuohy needle, which may also be referred to as an epidural needle, is a specific type of needle which is used for epidural procedures. During an epidural, this needle will be inserted into the epidural space around the spinal cord and used for the insertion of epidural catheters.
Tuohy needles were named after the American anesthesiologist, Edward Boyce Tuohy. Tuohy didn't actually invent the needles - that honor belongs to a Seattle dentist called Ralph L. Huber - but he did help to popularize them across North America and beyond.
Today, Tuohy Cannula are used in many hospitals and clinics around the world on a daily basis as a key part of epidural procedures; they're vital for helping to provide pain-relieving medications to women who are going through labor, as well as for patients who are preparing for or recovering from a range of painful invasive operations.
