During angioplasty, tremendous force must often be applied to guide the catheter through the artery. Sometimes, the blockage is so severe that the tube can't move through the artery and can even kink the tube. In such cases, it is difficult to place the balloon and stent in place correctly, and a kinked seaward tube may interfere with balloon deflation, making balloon removal difficult and increasing the risk to the patient. In severe cases, the seawall tube may break, requiring surgery or other complicated methods to remove the broken pipe.
