The most common pipe material is 304 stainless steel, but other stainless steel alloys are available including 304L, 316, 316L, 17-4PH and 17-7PH. Cobalt-chromium alloy and Nitinol alloy are also the selection application requirements when stainless steel does not meet the requirements.

The next major specifications include outer diameter (OD) and inner diameter (ID). Normally, OD is set to match the size of the catheter, and ID is optimized for various performance attributes. The tolerance geometry of both will also be required.
After dividing the catheter into several parts, the next certainty is the relative flexibility required for each part. Generally, catheters are the most flexible and stiffer at the distal and proximal ends. Our engineers have developed a flexibility scale that can assist as a starting point.
