Micro deep holes are typically drilled in a step-by-step drill sequence that periodically exits the bit in order to break off chips and prevent clogging. Step drilling also helps to prevent continuous extrusion at the bottom of the hole, which is particularly important when working cold-work hardened materials.
Brenner points out that the conventional wisdom is that you have to pull the bit out completely. If the use of interrupted feed (a few revolutions or a short time), chip can also be broken.
