Disposable Epidural Anesthesia Needles
When the catheter is thought to be placed in the epidural space, a test dose of lidocaine plus epinephrine should be administered to ensure the catheter is not in the intrathecal space or intravascular. The test dose usually used consists of 3 to 5 mL of 1.5% lidocaine with 1:200,000 epinephrine. If no changes in the heart rate or spinal blockade are identified, the chest wall should be assessed to prove a sensory level. When this is done, the epidural can be dosed with approximately 5 to 8 mL of 0.125% bupivacaine and fentanyl, 4 μg/mL.
