How to deal with slight local pain after bone marrow puncture?

The bone marrow puncture needle is a tiny and traumatic examination procedure. Under local anesthesia, the doctor gently pierces the bone marrow cavity from the surface of the anterior superior iliac spine (or posterior superior iliac spine or sternum) with a 2-3 cm long bone piercing needle. Use a syringe to draw 0.1-0.2 ml of bone marrow fluid, then pull out the needle, and cover the puncture point with gauze. The whole process takes about a few minutes.

Bone marrow puncture is an invasive examination, but because of its simple operation, less bone marrow fluid extraction, and less patient pain, it does not cause major damage to the body and does not require special care. For those who are weak and have bleeding tendency, the following measures should be taken after the examination:

 1. Hemostasis: usually compression to stop bleeding.

2. Bed rest: After the examination, there will be slight pain in the puncture part. The patient can rest in bed for a day, restrict physical activity, and then return to normal.

3. To prevent infection: When puncturing, the local tissue is strictly disinfected. Keep the skin of the puncture area clean and dry, and replace the gauze covered with blood or sweat in time. When the pinhole appears red, swollen, hot, or painful, use 2% tincture of iodine or 0.5% iodophor to apply the local area 3-4 times a day. If it is accompanied by systemic fever, you should contact your doctor and choose antibiotics appropriately according to your condition.
