Composition of brass

Copper is an alloy composed of copper and zinc. Brass composed of copper and zinc is called ordinary brass. If it is composed of more than two kinds of elements, it is called special brass. Brass has strong wear resistance, brass is often used in the manufacture of valves, water pipes, air conditioning inside and outside the machine connection pipe and radiator.

Common brass is a copper zinc binary alloy, and its zinc content varies widely, so its room temperature structure is also very different. According to the Cu-Zn binary state diagram, the room temperature structure of brass has three types:

1. The microstructure of brass containing zinc below 35% at room temperature is composed of a single phase α solid solution, which is called α brass.

2, zinc content in the range of 36% ~ 46% of the brass, the microstructure at room temperature by (α+β) two-phase composition, called (α+β) brass (two-phase brass).

3, zinc content of brass more than 46% ~ 50%, the microstructure at room temperature is only composed of β phase, called β brass.
