What are the properties of brass

Oct 13, 2022

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. If brass is only made of copper and zinc, it is called common brass. Brass is commonly used in the manufacture of valves, water pipes, air conditioning inside and outside machine connection pipes and radiators. A better understanding of brass characteristics is of great significance to the use of brass and the development of brass industry.

Mechanical PROPERTIES OF COMMON BRASS: BRASS HAS DIFFERENT MECHANICAL PROPERTIES DUE TO DIFFERENT ZINC CONTENT. FIG. 7 shows THE curve OF mechanical properties of brass with different zinc content. For α brass, σb and δ increase with increasing zinc content. For (α+β) brass, the strength increases at room temperature until the zinc content increases to about 45%. If the zinc content is further increased, the strength decreases sharply due to the appearance of a more brittle r phase (solid solution based on Cu5Zn8 compound) in the alloy structure. The ductility of (α+β) brass at room temperature always decreases with increasing zinc content.

Properties of special brass: the α and β phases in special brass are multiple complex solid solutions, and their strengthening effect is larger, while the α and β phases in ordinary brass are simple Cu-Zn solid solutions, and their strengthening effect is lower. Although the zinc equivalent is comparable, the properties of the multiplex solid solution are different from those of the simple binary solid solution. Therefore, a small amount of multiple strengthening is a way to improve the properties of alloys.

Characteristics of lead brass: Lead is actually insoluble in brass and distributed on grain boundaries as free particles. Lead brass has α and (α+β) according to its structure. Due to the harmful effect of lead, α-lead brass has very low plasticity at high temperature, so it can only be cold deformed or hot extruded. (α+β) lead brass has good plasticity at high temperature and can be forged. Tin BRASS: THE ADDITION of tin in BRASS, can obviously improve the heat resistance of the alloy, especially improve the ability of corrosion resistance to seawater, so tin brass has "navy brass" said.
