4. Aluminum oxide and aluminum hydroxide

There are many variants of Al 2o 3, among which α -- Al 2o 3 and γ -- Al 2o 3 are the most well known. They are refractory and water insoluble white powder. The oxide film on the surface of elemental aluminum is neither α -- Al 2o 3 nor γ -- Al 2o 3, which is another variant of alumina.

In nature, the corundum is α -Al 2 O 3, and its crystal belongs to the hexagonal compact packing structure. Six O atoms surround an octahedron, and Al atoms occupy 2/3 of the octahedral holes in the crystal. The melting point and hardness of α -- Al 2 O 3 are both very high (2288 ± 15K) and (8.8) due to the high lattice energy due to the compact packing structure. It is insoluble in water, acid or base, resistant to corrosion and has good electrical insulation. Used as high hardness grinding materials and refractory materials.
