What Is A Bone Marrow Aspiration Needle Procedure?

Dec 09, 2022

Bone marrow aspiration needle surgery is a procedure that removes a small amount of bone marrow. Bone marrow is the spongy tissue inside your bones that creates blood cells. During a bone marrow aspiration, your provider uses a needle to take a small sample of the liquid part of your bone marrow.

Your provider may order a bone marrow aspiration to evaluate your red blood cells (RBCs), white blood cells (WBCs), and platelets. Sometimes, your provider will use a bone marrow aspiration in conjunction with a bone marrow biopsy.
