What Happens During A Bone Marrow Aspiration Needle Procedure?

Typically, your healthcare provider takes a bone marrow sample from your pelvis (hip bone). They insert a needle from your lower back near your hip.

Before the bone marrow is aspirated, your provider will give you an anesthetic so that you will not feel anything during the procedure. Your provider may also use a sedative to keep you awake but in a relaxed state.

During aspiration, you lie on your back, or on your side, on the examining table. Then the technician or doctor.

A hollow needle is inserted into your pelvis.

A syringe is attached to the needle and a sample of bone marrow fluid is extracted.

Pull out the needle and syringe.

A bandage is applied to the area to prevent infection and promote healing.
