The Difference Between Epidural Anesthesia Needle And Lumbar Epidural Union
Nov 29, 2022
Even the epidural is a puncture needle through the ligamentum flavum to reach the epidural space, and a local anesthetic is injected into the epidural space to block the nerve roots. Theoretically, it can be done from the cervical to the sacral vertebrae, but now it is rare to see cervical vertebrae. A combination of lumbar anesthesia (or subarachnoid anesthesia) and epidural anesthesia. The space of lumbar anesthesia is usually L2,3 or L3, and it should not be higher than 4, otherwise it will be full spinal anesthesia, because the lumbar anesthesia is to inject drugs directly into the subarachnoid space and block the spinal cord. The high level of lumbar anesthesia will lead to quite dangerous central anesthesia. Therefore, the amount of drugs used in lumbar anesthesia is much less than epidural anesthesia. In lumbar epidural union, drugs are first injected into the subarachnoid space through the lumbar anesthesia needle, then the lumbar anesthesia needle is pulled out, and then a very thin tube is placed into the epidural space through the epidural puncture needle, so that drugs can be continuously administered to the epidural space, to assist the anesthetic effect of the lumbar anesthesia.
