N-depth Analysis Of 17-4PH Precipitation-Hardening Stainless Steel
Jul 13, 2026
Approximately 70% of a medical shaver blade's cutting performance depends on the cutting head material selection and heat treatment process. Manners Technology recommends and extensively uses 17-4PH stainless steel (i.e., SUS630, UNS S17400) for the serrated tip of its Arthroscopy Sharp-toothed Shaver Blade. After aging treatment, the hardness reaches HRC 52–56-a material strategy grounded in sound metallurgical reasoning.
17-4PH is a martensitic precipitation-hardening stainless steel with a typical composition of 17% Cr, 4% Ni, 4% Cu, and trace Nb/Cb. Compared to commonly used 440C (high-carbon high-chromium steel), it exhibits excellent machinability in the solution-annealed condition (Condition A), facilitating high-precision hollow-bore machining of the inner tube on Citizen L12-1M7 sliding-head lathes. Subsequently, aging at 480°C–500°C precipitates copper-rich nano-phases, achieving tensile strength >1310 MPa and hardness HRC 40–47 (with localized tip hardness up to HRC 52–56), thus balancing high wear resistance and good corrosion resistance (approaching that of 304 stainless steel). This is especially important for reusable shavers subjected to repeated high-temperature/high-pressure steam sterilization (134°C pre-vacuum).
In the Manners Technology process flow: 17-4PH bar stock is solution-annealed → inner bore turned (sliding-head lathe ensures ±0.005mm positioning accuracy) → tooth profile formed (CBN wheel rough/finish grind) → final age hardening. This "machine-first, harden-last" sequence avoids excessive grinding on already-hardened material, which could cause grinding burn and micro-cracks. Tooth profiles (pitch, depth, rake angle, clearance angle) are customizable per OEM specs-commonly trapezoidal or triangular serrations with tip widths controlled to tens of microns.
Why not use 304/316L for the cutting tip? Austenitic stainless steels have hardness only ~HB 150–200 (≈HRC 10–15), unable to retain a sharp cutting edge, and dull rapidly when cutting fibrocartilage or synovium. Some competitors use 440C (HRC 58–60), but its weldability and corrosion resistance are slightly inferior to 17-4PH, and it is more prone to pitting in chloride environments (saline, body fluids). Manners Technology's choice of 17-4PH achieves the optimal balance among hardness, toughness, weldability, and body-fluid corrosion resistance-particularly suitable for dissimilar-material laser welding to SUS304/SUS316L shaft tubes.
Additionally, Manners Technology performs electropolishing on the 17-4PH tip to remove the ground recast layer and form a passivated surface film, lowering Ra to a mirror-like finish. This not only reduces tissue adhesion but also improves fatigue life by removing micro-crack initiation sites-important since the inner tube rotates at thousands of RPM where any surface defect could propagate into fatigue failure.
For purchasers, specifying 17-4PH tips means longer effective cutting life (even under high load in single-use shavers), fewer intraoperative blade changes, and consistent cutting feel. Manners Technology provides, with each shipment, chemical composition analysis and hardness test records for SUS630 material, ensuring every shaver tip meets drawing-specified HRC range and metallographic requirements-a key quality endorsement for high-end OEM/ODM manufacturing.
