Is The Pathological Diagnosis Of Puncture Biopsy Needle Reliable

Dec 24, 2022

Puncture biopsy needle refers to first locating the lesion under the guidance of B-ultrasound or CT, and then puncturing the tumor tissue with a specific fine needle or thick needle for pathological diagnosis. In general, puncture pathological biopsies are reliable as long as they reach the lesion site.
However, for some cases where local puncture biopsy may not be able to see the complete tumor morphology and capsule condition, complete tumor resection is required before diagnosis, such as lymphoma or soft tissue tumor, and follicular tumor of thyroid.
The pathological diagnosis of puncture biopsy generally has three types: one is to penetrate the diseased tissue, the diagnosis is relatively clear and can be diagnosed. The second one did not penetrate the diseased tissue and could only give a descriptive report. Thirdly, due to the limitation of the lesions sampled, a definite report could not be made or suspected lesions could not be confirmed, so immunohistochemistry was needed to confirm the diagnosis.
For those that do not penetrate into the lesion tissue, the mass can be re-punctured or surgically removed, and then pathological diagnosis can be performed to clarify the nature of the mass (or lesion), and then corresponding clinical treatment can be conducted according to the pathological report.
