Demystify the tube-drawing, tip-grinding, laser-window (FNA), trough-notching (CNB), and electropolish steps unique to biopsy/aspiration puncture needles - why "hypodermic process + minor tweak" is a myth.

Start by noting that a biopsy puncture needle is a structural sampling device, not a fluid-delivery tube. The biggest differentiator is thin-wall tube drawing:

14G CNB: OD ≈1.65 mm, wall 0.15 mm

18G CNB: OD ≈1.27 mm, wall 0.13 mm

22G FNA: OD ≈0.70 mm, wall 0.10–0.12 mm

Achieving these wall thicknesses with ±0.01 mm tolerance requires multi-pass plug drawing with in-process annealing. A 0.005 mm deviation can make the lumen too small to pass a core or too weak to withstand insertion torque - especially in coaxial introducer puncture needles.

Tip Processing

Next, tip processing diverges by type:

FNA puncture needles: 3-bevel or 4-bevel grind + side-hole laser cut 1.5–3 mm from tip. 5-axis laser ensures burr-free edge; electrolytic polish inside/outside reduces cell adhesion.

CNB puncture needles: Trocar tip ground to match cannula OD, specimen trough milled or laser-cut to length tolerance ±0.1 mm. Some use etched (chemical milled) troughs; laser-cut troughs need edge softening pass.

Surface Treatment

Then describe surface treatment: electropolish to Ra ≤0.15 µm inner/outer; passivation per ASTM A967 for 316L; ultrasonic clean + particulate count per ISO 8537/ISO 7886 spirit (even if not syringe-infusion, particulates still matter).

Assembly & Function Test

Assembly & function test: stylet (for FNA) must slide with 0.8–1.5 N resistance; CNB trigger mechanism (if spring-loaded) must fire and retrieve notch fully without tissue crush - tested on synthetic silicon or porcine tissue.
