Liver biopsy performed by an experienced physician is safe. Possible risks include: pain. Pain at the biopsy site is the most common complication after liver biopsy. Pain after a liver biopsy is usually mild discomfort. If the pain makes you feel uncomfortable, you may take a painkiller. Bleeding. There may be bleeding after liver biopsy. Excessive bleeding may require hospitalization for blood transfusion or surgery to stop bleeding. Accidental damage to nearby organs. In rare cases, the needle may stick to another internal organ, such as the gallbladder or lung, during a liver biopsy.
