There is a high degree of variability with the diagnostic yield of FNA needles , especially for pancreatic lesions. The diagnostic accuracy ranges from 78% to 95%. The diagnostic yield is even lower when it is used for mediastinal masses and gastrointestinal stromal tumors. A retrospective study on 37 patients reported a sensitivity of 78.4% for the FNA needle. FNA needles do not provide core tissue for immunohistochemical staining and for histology. EUS‑FNB needle was developed over a decade ago to overcome this limitation. Different principles have been used to design different types of FNB needles.
