After finding the target, determining the method, and selecting the transducer, the first step of the procedure is to mark the skin. This is done before cleansing the skin and sterile conditions. Using the direct method of needle guidance, place the transducer over the target and determine the puncture site. Place a mark (such as X) on the puncture site, and place a line on the other end of the transducer to indicate the imaging plane. The use of surgical markers will help ensure that the markers are not washed off during cleansing of the skin. If you use the indirect method, you can use an open paper clip that passes between the transducer face and the skin to accurately mark the skin directly on the target.
