What is the difference between epidural anesthesia and subarachnoid anesthesia?

May 09, 2022

These two types of anesthesia are collectively referred to as intraspinal anesthesia. Between the ligamentum flavum and the dura mater is the epidural space, where the anesthetic is placed is called epidural anesthesia. There is a potential anatomical space between the dura mater and the arachnoid, which is generally indistinguishable clinically. There is a space between the arachnoid and the spinal cord called the subarachnoid space. Putting anesthetics here is called subarachnoid anesthesia. The difference between epidural (cavity) anesthesia and subarachnoid anesthesia is that the dura is the boundary.
