Disposable Medical Spinal Injection Needle

When performing a lumbar puncture, the patient can adopt two postures. The preferred position is lying on the side (left side), with the patient's legs bent and pulled toward the chest, with the upper chest bent forward in a nearly fetal position.

It should be noted that the point where the needle enters the spine needs to be at the same level as the midline of the spine. Ideally, it should be at the same level as the patient's head to get the most accurate readings 5,6. Sometimes for comfort, pillows can be placed under the patient's head and/or between the legs. The patient's back should be perpendicular to the table.

The second position is upright or sitting. This is used when the horizontal position fails. Let the patient sit on the edge of the bed with their legs on a stool or chair, and let their shoulders and upper back roll forward. The chair is positioned so that the thighs face upward toward the abdomen. The cracking pressure shown is measured in a lateral position.

If for whatever reason you adopt a sitting position and seek to open pressure, once the needle is in the correct space, the patient should be carefully moved into a lateral position. Once the patient is in this position, the stylet can be withdrawn. It is important not to remove the stylet before the patient is safely positioned to the outside.
