What is biopsy needle puncture? Is biopsy a minor operation?

Dec 23, 2021

A biopsy is a method of obtaining a small piece of diseased tissue through surgical techniques and sending it to the pathology department for examination, so as to obtain a preoperative diagnosis. Commonly used biopsy for bone tumors are divided into closed biopsy, open biopsy and excision biopsy. Although the operation of biopsy is not difficult, it is not a "minor operation" and needs to be taken seriously by bone oncologists, because incorrect biopsy often causes the tumor to contaminate important local structures such as blood vessels and nerve bundles, making the tumor unable to be completely removed.

Biopsy should follow:

(1) Prior to the biopsy, it should be taken as seriously as the preparation of a surgical plan, and carefully planned;

(2) Strictly observe the principle of aseptic operation during biopsy;

(3) Ensure that the biopsy does not affect the future surgical plan, and the contaminated area of the biopsy should be completely excised;

(4) Ensure that there are enough representative tissue specimens for pathologists to diagnose;

(5) If the doctor or hospital does not have the conditions to diagnose and treat bone and soft tissue tumors, the patient should be transferred to a doctor or hospital capable of diagnosing and treating bone tumors for regular treatment before the biopsy.
