What are the hazards and effects of lumbar puncture
Feb 28, 2022
As soon as some parents hear that their child is going to have a lumbar puncture, they worry a lot, for fear of affecting the brain and becoming stupid in the future; they are also afraid that the waist will be stabbed, and they will not be able to walk in the future. In fact, these worries are unnecessary.
There is a subarachnoid space between the brain tissue and the skull, which is filled with clear cerebrospinal fluid, which nourishes and protects the brain tissue. In medical treatment, in order to collect cerebrospinal fluid, lumbar puncture is often required for the following three aspects.
(1) Diagnosis When a disease in the brain of a child needs to be diagnosed clearly, the cerebrospinal fluid is obtained by lumbar puncture and checked. These diseases include encephalitis, meningitis, myelitis, cerebrovascular disease, traumatic brain injury, and more.
(2) Treatment When children suffer from intracranial diseases such as tuberculous meningitis, meningeal leukemia, etc., it is difficult for the drug to penetrate into the brain through the blood-brain barrier due to intramuscular, intravenous or oral methods, so that the drug needs to reach the therapeutic concentration. Using lumbar puncture, the drug is injected into the subarachnoid space into the cerebrospinal fluid circulation to make the drug effective and achieve the purpose of treating the disease.
(3) Anesthesia Before some major operations such as abdominal surgery, the doctor needs to inject anesthesia into the subdural through lumbar puncture to play an anesthetic role.
In normal people, the cerebrospinal fluid is 150 to 200 ml, which circulates continuously in the subarachnoid space and needs to be replaced 4 to 5 times a day. During a lumbar puncture, the needle is inserted between the lumbar vertebrae, which is far away from the brain, and will not hurt the brain at all, not to mention that only a few milliliters of cerebrospinal fluid are extracted during one puncture, which will not cause any harm to children at all. As for the serious illness of children, if it is a contraindication to lumbar puncture, the doctor will consider not to do it. For children who have had a lumbar puncture, attention should be paid to the care of the children, and they should be allowed to lie down (without a pillow) for at least 6 hours, otherwise it will cause headaches.
