The sequelae of lumbar puncture
Jan 05, 2022
Headache after lumbar puncture is the most common complication. There are more women than men. It is generally related to the flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the puncture hole after lumbar puncture, the low pressure of cerebrospinal fluid, and the stretching of the meninges. Most of them occur within 1-3 days after surgery, with an incidence of 3% to 30%. The typical symptom is headache in an upright position, which improves after lying down. The pain is mostly occipital, top, and occasionally tinnitus and photophobia. Gender, age and the diameter of the puncture needle affect the incidence of headache. The incidence is inversely proportional to age and directly proportional to the diameter of the puncture needle. Most of the headaches go to the pillow and supine, and get better after rehydration. 85% of the cases do not exceed 7 days, but there are also a few people who last for 1-5 months or longer.
