Manners provides a customizable component that can be used or incorporated in a medical device that can be navigated through the blood vessels of a human subject. The component includes a tubular portion with an intermittent spiral defined by alternately cut and uncut portions. The stiffness of the discontinuous spiral is between that of the continuous cut spiral and the stiffness of the uncut pipe. The stiffness of the discontinuous spiral along its length can be changed by changing its pitch or the number of bridging members or the length of each bridging member. According to the method of manufacturing such a part, a tubular member and a cutting member are provided. At least one of the tubular member and the cutting member moves relative to the other through an angle that defines a spiral path, while the cutting member alternates between cutting and uncutting the tubular member to form an intermittent spiral.
