6.About Heat Treatment
Heat treatment is to change the structure of solid steel by reheating, heat preservation or cooling, so as to meet the use requirements or process requirements of parts.Heating temperature, holding time and cooling speed can make different microstructure changes of steel.A blacksmith can increase the hardness of a heated piece of steel by submerging it in water to cool it quickly (quenching, as the experts call it). This is an example of heat treatment.
Heat treatment processes include annealing, normalizing, hardening and tempering, etc.Annealing is the heating of steel parts, holding for a certain time, and then slowly cooling together with the furnace, in order to obtain a fine and uniform structure, reduce hardness, in order to facilitate the cutting process.
Normalizing is to heat the steel parts, take them out of the furnace after insulation, and then cool them in the air, which is suitable for refining the low carbon steel.Quenching is to heat a steel piece and then cool it quickly in water or oil to improve its hardness.
Tempering is usually the follow-up process of quenching. The quenched steel is reheated and cooled after insulation, so that the structure is stable and the brittleness is eliminated.
There are many automotive parts, not only to retain the toughness of the core, but also to change the surface structure to improve the hardness, it is necessary to use the surface high-frequency quenching or carburizing, cyanide heat treatment process.
