How long does it take to recover after a lumbar puncture

Apr 06, 2022

Under normal circumstances, it can be recovered within 1-3 days after the lumbar puncture. Some patients may recover relatively slowly, but most of them will not exceed 7 days.

Lumbar puncture is mainly used for diagnosing infectious diseases of the central nervous system and measuring the pressure of cerebrospinal fluid. The operation is to insert a puncture needle through the lumbar intervertebral space into the subarachnoid space to extract part of the cerebrospinal fluid for testing. Therefore, sometimes lumbar puncture will break the balance of cerebrospinal fluid circulation. Lead to changes in intracranial pressure, resulting in dizziness, headache and so on. After lumbar puncture, after the cerebrospinal fluid balance is restored by the body's autonomous adjustment, dizziness and headache will mostly recover. This process takes about 1-3 days.

After the lumbar puncture, it is recommended that the patient lie down on the pillow for 6 hours to relieve hypotension headache. In addition, if the patient has intracranial hypertension, brain herniation or intracranial space-occupying lesions, lumbar puncture cannot be performed to avoid serious consequences.
