In medicine, percutaneous ultrasound-guided FNA and biopsy procedures are commonly used to determine whether the lesion represents inflammation, infection, or neoplasia. When laboratory abnormalities suggest underlying diseases and the need for analysis of tumor diseases, biopsy will also be used to check these parts.

Many locations and types of lesions can be sampled using ultrasound guidance. Abdominal puncture, pleural puncture, and pericardiocentesis are also usually performed under ultrasound guidance. In addition, ultrasound can identify and guide the needle into the lesion along the surface of the bone. The samples obtained from these sites can be used for fluid, cytology, culture, or biochemical analysis.
