Kirschner wire is generally made of medical stainless steel and medical Nitinol alloy.
Kirschner wire is a kind of internal fixation material commonly used in orthopedics, its original specification is generally fixed in about 20 cm, and there are several different specifications between 0.5-2 mm in diameter. It is used to fix short fractures or avulsion fractures with low stress, and is also often used in the fixation of temporary fracture blocks in orthopedics. Due to the wide application, the maximum diameter of Kirschner wire gradually increased to 4 mm with the external fixation bracket, with external fixation locking nails to fix pelvic fractures, calcaneal fractures and other emergency larger fractures
In 1909, Martin Kirschner first modified the Schiller needle into a Kirschner needle, and over the next 20 years Martin Kirschner made many improvements before producing the final product. Since then, kirschner wire has been widely used in surgery. In orthopedics, it is mainly used for foot, hand, knee, ankle and other parts, as well as the tension band of elbow and the auxiliary reduction and fixation of various articular surface fracture blocks.
