Contraindications for epidural anesthesia

Mar 26, 2022

Epidural anesthesia is not an option for all patients, and the contraindications are as follows:

1. Patients with shock and hypovolemia cannot choose epidural anesthesia, which will make the condition worse;

2. Infection at the puncture site, and patients with bacteremia and sepsis cannot perform epidural anesthesia;

3. Patients with coagulation problems. In a hypocoagulable state, thrombocytopenia, and prolonged coagulation time, epidural anesthesia cannot be performed, because during epidural puncture, it may damage blood vessels and cause bleeding. Compression of nerves leads to paraplegia, so epidural anesthesia cannot be performed;

4. Epidural anesthesia requires puncture between the vertebral bodies. If the spine is deformed or has undergone surgery or trauma, especially low back pain, low back pain, and lumbar disc herniation, epidural anesthesia is not suitable;

5. Patients who do not cooperate are also not suitable for epidural anesthesia. For example, some elderly patients have Alzheimer's disease. This situation does not cooperate at all, and children also do not cooperate. In situations like this, epidural anesthesia is not suitable for an awake state. If it is necessary to do epidural anesthesia, it is necessary to do epidural puncture under general anesthesia.
