Can needle of kidney biopsy puncture cause injury to human body?

Renal biopsy is a rapid, minimally invasive and relatively safe clinical procedure. But as an invasive test, kidney biopsy does cause some damage.

1. The blood in the urine. Hematuria occurs in almost all patients undergoing renal puncture, but in most cases it is only microscopic, that is, visible only under a microscope. Less than 5% of patients may have visible hematuria with the naked eye. Hematuria after renal biopsy mostly occurs during the first urination after biopsy, and then gradually decreases, most of which disappear spontaneously within a few days.

2. Perirenal hematoma. Relatively common. That is, the kidney bleeding after the puncture, part of the urine excretion, part of the accumulation around the kidney. The vast majority are small hematomas that can absorb themselves and do not require any treatment. Larger hematomas are infrequent and tend to self-absorption within three months.

Arteriovenous fistula. Relatively rare. That is, during kidney puncture, due to artificial injury, the natural "barrier" between the artery and the vein is broken, so the "fistula" is formed, and the arterial blood directly enters the vein through the fistula. Most arteriovenous fistulas are self-closing and repair, and very few require arterial embolization.

4. The infection. Relatively rare. As an invasive test, kidney biopsy carries some risk of infection. However, the risk of infection is very low due to the mature kidney biopsy technology and hospital disinfection measures.
