Minimally invasive or keyhole surgery relies on reaching different parts of the body and entering the arteries through small access points. By creating these small incisions, insertable medical devices can be inserted to perform many procedures, such as imaging, biopsy, and device delivery. However, to get to the right place, one must pass through the arterial system, which has many bends and restricted access. To gain access without damaging the body, a flexible and steerable delivery device is required. The surgeon must be able to transmit the thrust and torque of the hand to the end of the device. In order to obtain this, a wide range of engineering methods and designs have been developed, turning a hard metal tube into a flexible hypotube and the key is laser micromachining.
