Many medical procedures require the introduction of tubes into the blood vessels of the body. For example, blood vessel defects in the human vasculature, such as blockages and stenosis, are usually treated by intraluminal delivery of therapeutic fluids or implants (such as expandable stents and embolic coils). The implant can take any of a variety of forms and can be delivered to the diseased site in a variety of ways. According to a known method of delivering medical implants, the distal end of a flexible catheter is positioned adjacent to a target site of a blood vessel of the body, such as an aneurysm. Once the catheter is properly positioned, the delivery/separation system passes through the lumen of the catheter until the distal end of the delivery system leaves the distal end of the catheter in the area of the target site. Implants carried at the distal end of the delivery/detachment system, such as embolic coils, are then released to the diseased site.
