Total thyroidectomy refers to the total removal of one side of the thyroid gland, not both lobes of the thyroid gland. It is one type of thyroidectomy, and the other is partial removal. All or part of the contralateral thyroid tissue is often retained to maintain desired physiological functions.

Thyroidectomy can be divided into total resection and major resection. Total excision is suitable for thyroid cancer and malignant lymphoma. Most excisions apply

1. Simple goiter of trachea and esophagus;

2. Nodular goiter accompanied by hyperthyroidism or suspected malignant transformation;

3. Severe hyperthyroidism, ineffective after about one year of drug treatment.
