The contact surface of switch socket contacts oxidizes when in contact with the atmosphere. If copper is oxidized, copper oxide or cuprous oxide film will be formed on its surface. The conductivity of copper oxide film is very poor, and its resistivity is more than 1016 times greater than that of pure copper. Therefore, the oxidation of copper contacts leads to very high contact resistance and an inadmissible temperature rise through the current. Although the resistivity of silver oxide film is also very large, but compared with copper oxide film, only 1/1012 below it, and in not too high temperature can be broken, decomposition, therefore, unless mechanical friction can be used to remove the rotating structure of oxide film, generally not copper contact. Considering the low arc resistance, wear resistance and fusion welding resistance of pure silver, so the electrical contacts with the working current above 40A are made of silver base alloy (such as silver - nickel, silver - tungsten, silver - cadmium oxide, silver - tin oxide, etc.) contacts, and are brazed on the connecting plate in the form of inserts. In weak electric relay, precious metals such as gold, molybdenum and platinum are often used to make contact inserts. With this in mind, you can see why contacts are no longer allowed to work when the inserts are severely worn.
