Gear should be made of suitable materials according to the working conditions when used. The choice of gear material has a direct influence on the machining performance and service life of gear.
For gear transmission with high speed, the tooth surface is easy to produce fatigue pitting, so the material with higher hardness and thicker hard layer should be selected. Gear transmission with impact load, gear teeth easily broken, should choose good toughness material; Low speed and heavy load gear transmission, gear teeth easy to break, tooth surface easy to wear, should choose the material of high mechanical strength, tooth surface hardness.
45 steel has better comprehensive mechanical properties after heat treatment. After normalizing or tempering, the microstructure and machinability of the material can be improved, the surface roughness after machining can be reduced, and the deformation during quenching can be reduced. Because of the poor hardenability of 45 steel, the material becomes brittle and deformed after quenching, so the tooth surface is generally used for quenching, and the hardness can reach HRC52-58. Suitable for machine tool industry, 7 grade accuracy below gear.
40Cr is a medium carbon alloy steel. Compared with 45 steel, the addition of a small amount of chromium alloy can refine the grain of the metal, improve the strength and hardenability, and reduce the deformation during quenching.
The method of carburizing and quenching is to make the gear get high tooth surface hardness and the center has enough toughness and high anti-bending fatigue strength. Generally, low carbon alloy steel 18CrMnTi is selected, which has good cutting performance. The workpiece deformation is small when carburizing, and the quenching hardness can reach HRC56-62. After nitriding treatment, 38CrMoAlA steel has higher wear resistance and corrosion resistance than carburized and hardened gear, and its deformation is very small. It can be used as a gear material requiring wear resistance in high-speed transmission.
Cast iron is easy to cast into complex shapes, easy to cut, low cost, but its bending strength, impact resistance and wear resistance is poor. It is usually used for gears with little force, no impact and low speed.
Non-ferrous metals as gear materials include brass HPB59-1 bronze QSNP10-1 and aluminum alloy LC4.
Bakelite, nylon and plastics are also used to make gears. These materials have the advantages of easy processing, low transmission noise, wear resistance, good vibration damping, etc., used in light load, vibration damping, low noise, poor lubrication conditions.
