Why Does Brass Blacken,

Dec 24, 2021

Brass blackens after oxidation.

Ordinary brass is a binary alloy of copper and zinc. Its zinc content varies greatly, so its room-temperature structure is also quite different. According to cu-Zn binary state diagram, there are three kinds of brass at room temperature: brass with zinc content less than 35%, brass at room temperature is composed of single-phase α solid solution, called α brass.

Brass with zinc content between 36% and 46% consists of two phases (α+β) at room temperature and is called (α+β) brass. Brass with a zinc content between 46% and 50% contains only the β phase and is called β brass.
