Bone marrow access refers to the rapid establishment of fluid access for emergency treatment by utilizing the bone marrow cavity, a potential vascular access connected with the venous system.

The use of bone marrow access for transfusion resuscitation began in 1920. Intravenous intubation was gradually withdrawn from clinical use due to advances in the technology, until it was reintroduced in the 1980s to increase the speed of drug delivery during resuscitation of infants and young children.

Venous blood in the marrow rich sinuses enters the systemic circulation through the medullary vein system, nutrient vein and perforator vein. Therefore, live liquid drugs will be quickly absorbed into the systemic circulation after being injected into the bone marrow cavity, and intrabone marrow infusion will use this way to achieve the purpose of infusion.

As the red bone marrow in children's long bones is gradually replaced by yellow bone marrow with fewer blood vessels with the increase of age, intraosseous infusion may only be suitable for children who still have red bone marrow (less than 6 years old).
