Although both a bone marrow biopsy and a bone marrow aspiration require the use of a puncture needle to obtain a sample, the two differ in terms of sampling and testing.
(1) Materials
Bone marrow aspiration: The extraction of bone marrow fluid.
Bone marrow biopsy: Biopsy of bone marrow tissue.
(2) Laboratory tests
Bone marrow aspiration: The extracted bone marrow fluid can be used for smear, which can fine judge the proportion of nucleated cells in the bone marrow, and can be used for histochemical staining to identify the disease.
Bone marrow biopsy: Bone marrow tissue is taken and can be used for pathological examination. Bone marrow biopsy can further supplement diseases that cannot be diagnosed by bone marrow puncture.
