What Is Spleen Puncture Needle

Objective To evaluate the safety and feasibility of CO2 digital subtraction angiography (CO2-DSA) for fine needle splenic puncture of portal vein. Methods Seven adult white rabbits were dissected by laparotomy under general anesthesia to expose the splenic tail. The 4.5 IV needle was punctured into the splenic parenchyma about 1cm deep, and CO2-DSA(2 ml/s, 10 ml) was performed to evaluate the portal angiography images. After removing the puncture needle, observe the bleeding condition of the puncture site to coagulate. The animals were then killed and the spleen was removed for gross and histological examination. Results CO2-DSA showed the main portal vein, the branches above grade 3 ~ 4 in the liver, the main splenic vein, the main and some branches of the superior mesenteric vein, and the intrahepatic portal vein disappeared after about 2 ~ 3 min development. In one rabbit, the left renal vein and inferior vena cava were developed by CO2 traffic through the splenic and renal veins. After the puncture needle was removed, a small amount of blood oozing was observed at the puncture site, which was automatically stopped after 3-5 minutes. No CO2 overflow, subcapsular tissue tear, or splenic hematoma were observed in all animals. Microscopic examination of the splenic capsule was complete without subcapsular hematoma. Conclusion Fine needle puncture of portal vein CO2-DSA is feasible, safe and effective. In normal adult rabbits, it is possible for CO2 to develop the left renal vein and inferior vena cava through splenic and renal vein traffic.
