Size Classification And Clinical Indications Of 15G Intraosseous Needles

Jul 31, 2026

15 gauge is the universal standard needle size for mainstream intraosseous needles in the global medical market. This unified caliber design is formulated based on a large number of clinical medical data, which balances the puncture stability, infusion efficiency and patient trauma degree, and is suitable for most clinical first-aid scenarios. Different from customized special-sized needles, the 15G standard intraosseous needle has strong versatility and compatibility, and can match conventional infusion equipment and pipeline accessories, which is convenient for medical staff to operate quickly in emergency scenarios and reduce equipment adaptation barriers.

Combined with human body weight, bone thickness and physical characteristics, 15G intraosseous needles are scientifically divided into three core specifications: 1.5cm pediatric model, 2.5cm conventional adult model and 4.5cm long obese adult model, covering all age groups and body types, realizing full-scene clinical coverage. The 1.5cm pediatric intraosseous needle is specially designed for children under 40kg. Children in this age group have thin tibial cortical bone, shallow bone marrow cavity and delicate limb tissues. The short needle body design can effectively avoid excessive puncture depth, prevent bone penetration damage and nerve and vascular injury, and ensure the safety of pediatric emergency infusion.

The 2.5cm adult intraosseous needle is the most widely used conventional model, suitable for children over 40kg and non-obese adults. For adolescents over 40kg, their bone development is close to adults, and the conventional 2.5cm needle body can smoothly penetrate the proximal tibial cortical bone and stably stay in the bone marrow cavity to complete infusion operation. For ordinary non-obese adults, the tibial tuberosity is obvious in location, the subcutaneous fat layer is thin, and the conventional needle body can accurately reach the effective infusion position, meeting the daily emergency rescue needs of adult patients such as shock, trauma and critical illness.

The 4.5cm long intraosseous needle is a special model for large and obese adults. Obese patients have thick subcutaneous fat and deep tibial cortical bone burial depth. Conventional short needles are easy to fail to penetrate the cortical bone or fail to reach the effective bone marrow cavity, resulting in infusion failure. The extended 4.5cm needle body can effectively penetrate the thick fat layer and cortical bone of obese patients. It is worth noting that even for obese adult patients, the 2.5cm conventional needle can also be used for proximal tibial intraosseous infusion on the premise that the tibial tuberosity is clearly palpable, which greatly improves the flexibility of clinical operation and reduces the equipment replacement frequency in emergency rescue.
