One Needle Tube, Three Design Logics — How Manufacturers Customize On Demand
Jun 30, 2026
A common mistake among procurement professionals is believing "a needle is just a needle; as long as the Gauge is right, it's fine." In reality, the design requirements for vaccination / blood draw / IM injection differ drastically across these three scenarios. Excellent manufacturers provide different SKU combinations across these three dimensions.
Vaccination Scenario
WHO and CDC recommended specifications for vaccine needles are 23G–25G × 25mm (1 inch); 16mm can be used for pediatric thigh vaccinations. The key point is not the needle tube but the bevel angle-short bevels cause less puncture pain than long bevels. Moreover, since vaccines are mostly suspensions, the inner diameter cannot be too narrow, otherwise injection resistance will be too high. If a manufacturer delivers "25G×25mm" but uses a long bevel, nurses will complain about "hard insertion" and return the goods.
Blood Draw Scenario
Blood collection needles (vacuum tube compatible) are typically 21G–22G × 1 inch, double-ended needles (one end into the vein, one end into the tube stopper). The hidden parameter here is the flow coefficient-there must be no steps in the needle hub lumen, otherwise prolonged blood draw time leads to hemolysis. Large European and American clients (such as BD and Terumo OEMs) require manufacturers to conduct "full-flow CFD simulation" before mold opening.
Intramuscular (IM) Injection Scenario
IM administration (such as penicillin, booster vaccines) commonly uses 22G–25G × 25–38mm; patients with thick fat layers require 38mm. Manufacturers often stumble on "silicone coating uniformity" here-IM needles are inserted deep and dwell for a long time; uneven coating causes the plunger to suddenly feel "gritty" during injection, which nurses can clearly feel.
IV and Special Scenarios
Peripheral IV initiation typically uses 18G–20G (flow rate priority); central venous lines can go up to 14G. This market is basically dominated by BD, Terumo, and Nipro. Chinese manufacturers mostly enter through ODM, competing on "thin-wall technology"-at the same 18G outer diameter, increasing the inner diameter by 0.05mm can boost flow rate by 15%. This is the watershed of high-end manufacturing.
📌 Advice for Brand Owners/OEMs: Don't let manufacturers "use one mold for everything." Vaccine needles, blood collection needles, and IM needles should at least have three separate BOMs, and bevel and silicone processes should also be tiered. Otherwise, clinical feedback will result in endless back-and-forth disputes.
