These include back pain after lumbar puncture and headache after lumbar puncture (PLPH). In the majority of patients, PLPH occurs within 3 days after lumbar puncture. For these patients, bed rest, adequate fluid replacement, and simple painkillers are required. Rare (<0.01%) but potentially more serious complications include post-lumbar puncture infection, spinal and cerebral subdural hematoma, and deep cerebral vein thrombosis. In a multicenter study of the feasibility of lumbar puncture, the incidence of complications after lumbar puncture was approximately 31%, but most of them were mild and severe complications were rare. The incidence of back pain, headache, and typical PLPH was 17%, 19%, and 9%, respectively. Only 0.3% of patients required blood patch treatment, and 0.7% required hospitalization.
