After sufficient time has been given to the anesthetic, the spinal needle can be introduced into the space. Slowly push the needle toward the umbilicus.
When using a cutting needle, make sure that the bevel of the needle is parallel to the direction of the spinal cord and spinal fibers. Therefore, if the inclined plane faces one side when in a sitting position, it should face upward when in a lying position.
This reduces the possibility of postoperative complications (such as headaches). Non-traumatic needles ("pencil points") can reduce the likelihood of this problem.

The space between the dura mater is approximately 4-5 cm from the surface of the skin. When the needle is advanced, when the needle enters the space, some practitioners will feel a sensation of giving or "banging", although this is not always the case.
Sometimes, when the needle passes through different layers, a similar sensation may be felt, but the needle has not yet entered the correct space. Therefore, some practitioners insert the needle and withdraw the stylet at regular intervals until it enters the space and draws the cerebrospinal fluid.
If no fluid is obtained, replace the probe and advance the needle a few centimeters or adjust the angle of the needle. Some patients may require longer usable needles.
