The first report of performing a lumbar puncture (LP) came from the late 19th century. Heinrich Irenaeus Quince (usually associated with lumbar puncture) reported at the Tenth Congress of Internal Medicine in April 1891 that he had performed 3 lumbar punctures on a coma patient with suspected tuberculosis meningitis, performed at intervals of 3 days. The patient recovers. The other case is a patient with chronic hydrocephalus and headache. The patient's lumbar puncture relieved the symptoms. One month after Quincke submitted his report to the conference, the then Registrar Walter Essex Wynter published 4 cases of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) aspiration in patients with suspected meningitis in The Lancet. Lumbar puncture is an operation specifically designed to relieve symptoms (mainly meningitis or increased intracranial pressure at the time). It later became a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure, and with the improvement of equipment, the awareness of aseptic technique, and the availability and knowledge of anesthesia, the technique became more complete.
