First of all, hematopoietic stem cells are collected from the body of the donor. The most common way is to circulate the donor's blood several times through the instrument to make it separate out different components, so as to filter out the hematopoietic stem cells. Another method is to use a needle directly to extract bone marrow from the iliac crest of the hip. Meanwhile, the recipient is prepared for a transplant, with high-dose chemotherapy followed by radiation to kill the patient's existing bone marrow, killing both cancer and hematopoietic stem cells. Of course, this also weakens the immune system and makes it less likely to attack the transplanted cells, which are then injected into the patient via the Central Line.

The cells initially circulate in the blood outside the patient, but molecules called chemokines on the stem cells act as homing agents, inducing them to quickly migrate to the bone marrow. Within a few weeks, the stem cells begin to multiply and produce new healthy blood cells. Just a few stem cells can regenerate the healthy bone marrow that the whole body needs.

Bone marrow transplants can also lead to plant-antitumor responses, in which the donated bone marrow produces new immune cells that can wipe out cancerous cells that the patient's original immune system could not, a phenomenon that can help eradicate stubborn blood cancers. But bone marrow transplants also carry certain risks, including graft-versus-host disease, which occurs when the immune Vascular Access Needle  system created by the donor cells attacks the patient's original organs.
