Intraosseous access needles can play an important role in resuscitation of critically ill patients to help speed the delivery of critical drugs. Very similar to peripheral or central access, obesity may present a challenge for the placement of bone marrow vascular access needles, as accurate placement depends on the use of landmarks that may not be accessible in that group. In addition, increasing soft tissue depth may render standard needles ineffective. The access needle needs a 5 mm excess length from the skin to the cortical bone to ensure successful placement (i.e. a maximum depth of 20 mm for the 25 mm needle). Studies investigating these questions are necessary to understand the reliability of interviews with obese patients.
