Bone Marrow Aspiration Needle
The purpose of bone marrow aspiration is to obtain diagnostic and prognostic information from horses with blood cell abnormalities. Bone marrow aspiration is used to obtain mesenchymal stem cells in the horse. The sternum is the most common site of bone marrow collection in the adult horse. There are seven sternebrae and the exiphisternum in the horse's chest. The body of the fifth sternebra is the safest aspiration site because it is cranial to the apex of the heart and not between the front limbs of the horse. The cortex of the wing of the ilium is thinner in the young horse and easily used as a site for bone marrow aspiration. In the adult this bone is thick and often hard to penetrate. Local anesthetic is injected to desensitize the subcutaneous tissues, the muscle layers, and the periosteum. The bone marrow spicules are the important part of the sample for the pathologist to examine.
