Will bone marrow puncture damage the body?

Dec 21, 2021

Bone marrow puncture is abbreviated as bone puncture, and it is one of the most frequently selected examination methods by hematologists. When the patient has multi-line blood cell abnormalities or anemia, white blood cell and thrombocytopenia that cannot be explained by general causes, bone biopsy is required to understand the proliferation of bone marrow and whether there is abnormal cell infiltration. Due to the influence of traditional concepts, some patients will feel fear when they hear of bone penetration examination, worrying that bone penetration will affect the body. In fact, this kind of worry is unnecessary. Bone marrow aspiration is just like a blood test. Only a small amount of bone marrow fluid can be taken to meet the needs of the examination, and the lost bone marrow fluid will soon be replaced by hematopoietic cells in the body. Will have any adverse effects on the body. Bone marrow aspiration is also a necessary examination for the diagnosis of leukemia, multiple myeloma and other malignant hematological tumors. Usually, a part of bone marrow fluid is collected for chromosome and genetic examination, which can help diagnosis and analysis of prognostic risk factors. Reexamination of bone puncture after treatment can assess the effect of treatment. Some understanding of the bone penetration process can help patients eliminate unnecessary worries and actively cooperate with the examination. Commonly used puncture sites are anterior superior iliac spine, posterior superior iliac spine and sternum. The anterior superior iliac spine and the posterior superior iliac spine are the protruding parts of the edges on both sides of the pelvis. Because these two are closer to the skin surface, the bone surface is wider and flat, and the marrow content is richer, they are often selected for puncture Location. The sternum also has the characteristics of being wide, flat and close to the body surface, but because its sides and back are the key parts of the mediastinum and the lungs and heart in the thoracic cavity, sternal puncture is rarely chosen, and care must be taken to prevent injury during the operation. Before bone penetration, local anesthesia is used. First, an anesthetic is used to inject a skin mound, and then the injection needle is inserted under the skin to the periosteum, and the anesthetic is injected on the periosteum. The quality of periosteal anesthesia is the key to whether the puncture is painful. After the needle enters the bone marrow cavity, connect the syringe to aspirate the bone marrow. When the bone marrow is aspirated, the patient may experience momentary soreness. After completing the bone marrow smear, cover the bone puncture site with clean gauze and fix it with tape. After a short rest, you can move normally. Note that the puncture site cannot be wetted by water within 3 days. Some patients will still feel local soreness for two or three days after bone puncture. This is normal. Don't worry too much, the symptoms will get better soon.
