When are needle biopsies needed for thyroid nodules and are needle biopsies risky?
Dec 09, 2021
What is thyroid fine needle aspiration? Thyroid fine needle aspiration is a simple procedure, similar to a blood test. The needle used for puncture is thinner than the normal blood drawing needle and only causes slight discomfort, so local anesthesia is not required before surgery. Generally speaking, under the guidance of B-ultrasonic probe, the doctor uses a puncture needle connected with a syringe to accurately extract the cells of the thyroid lesion and make a pathological smear. Finally, the pathologist makes cytological diagnosis under the microscope and completes a fine needle biopsy of the thyroid gland.
Ii. Why fine needle puncture is necessary Due to the diverse nature of thyroid nodules, common thyroid adenoma, nodular goiter, thyroid cancer, etc. At present, b-mode ultrasonography is routinely used for thyroid examination, but sometimes it is difficult to determine the nature of the thyroid by medical history and clinical examination, which brings difficulties to the selection of surgical methods and thus directly affects the therapeutic effect. At present, thyroid fine needle puncture cytology is considered as the gold standard for preoperative diagnosis of thyroid nodules, with a diagnostic coincidence rate of more than 80%, much higher than peT-CT and other examination methods, and has been widely used in clinical practice due to its advantages of minimally invasive, safety and accuracy.
